A slightly different note from me today.
Normally, when you hear from me, I’m sitting behind a computer somewhere, surrounded by fictional people who refuse to behave according to plan.
Today?
I’m in Oklahoma City for WriterCon.
For the next few days, I’ll be surrounded by writers, editors, publishing professionals, and other people who understand that having lengthy conversations about imaginary people is perfectly normal behavior.
I’m looking forward to it.
Writing is a funny profession. So much of it happens alone.
We sit at our desks and build entire worlds inside our heads. We create people, fall in love with them, put them through terrible things, occasionally kill someone, and then wander into the kitchen for another cup of coffee as if nothing unusual has happened.
And then every once in a while, we get to come out of our writing caves and spend time with other people who do exactly the same thing.
That’s one of the things I’m most looking forward to this week.
Learning.
Talking books.
Meeting other writers.
Coming home with new ideas.
And, knowing me, probably adding approximately seventeen things to my already-too-long list of things I want to write.
This conference is also a little unusual for me because I’m attending as ME rather than as one of my pen names.
Which means both of my writing worlds get to come along.
There’s Jena Wilde, where you’ll find romantic suspense, capable heroines, protector heroes, danger, found family, and happily-ever-afters.
And there’s Edyn Frost, my much more supernatural alter ego, where you’ll find magic, dangerous immortals, morally gray heroes, and considerably more Hell.
Apparently one fictional universe wasn’t enough for me.
Meanwhile, back at Phoenix Shield…
The team isn’t getting the week off just because I’m at a conference.
I’m still working on Phoenix Shield, and Viper Strike is the first story preparing to come to life.
Viper and Sloane have been taking up quite a bit of space in my head lately—which means I suspect I’ll be sneaking away at some point this week to jot down something one of them has decided I absolutely cannot wait until I get home to write.
That’s the trouble with fictional people.
They don’t respect conference schedules.
I’ll share more about Viper, Sloane, and Phoenix Shield soon.
For now, I’m off to WriterCon.
And if you’d like, I’ll share a few glimpses of the adventure over on Instagram while I’m here.
Wish me luck!
Jena
